High Peak retain 2nd place in Sportshall competition
Megan Harris-Wood and Nell Tolley went to English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Saturday 3rd December to take part in a Northern Athletics open meeting.
They both started the day competing in the long jump, Megan in pool A, jumping very well to record a distance of 4.53m which placed her 5th and Nell in pool B finishing 11th with a great jump of 3.22m.
Nell then put in a confident performance in her 60m race in which she came 1st in her heat.
To finish the day they both ran in the 150m race, Nell came 3rd in her heat, she showed good determination in all her events, this being her first indoor athletics competition.
Megan won her 150m heat in very strong style, knocking 3 seconds off her PB!
Well done to both girls who showed how much they are enjoying taking part in the indoor athletic competitions.
Next Sunday, 11th December, is the fourth of the Derbyshire Sportshall competitions, held in Chesterfield. HPAC are currently in 2nd overall and are hoping to increase their strong position.
High Peak AC took a team to the North Midlands Cross Country league event at Shipley Park in Heanor on Saturday 3rd December. It was muddy and a hilly terrain.
First up were the U11 girls who had to run 1.7km. Alice Tolley had a phenomenal race with a burst of determination which led her to first place early in the race which she retained throughout, completing the course in 6 mins 43 secs, recording her first win in the league. She now stands in second place in the U11’s league table with one race in the series to go, just two points behind the leader Poppy Adkin of Saffron AC who came 5th on Saturday. It is set up for an exciting finale.
Xavier Morgan ran for the U11 boys who also had to run 1.7km. He showed a lot of perseverance in a strong field – trying his best, he ended up in 24th place.
Gregor Mcgill, U13’s boys and Sasha Scrag, U15’s girls, ran in the same race which was over a challenging 3.4km distance. A lot of hard work took Gregor into 25th in the boys race and Sasha into 30th in the girls. Even though the longer distance isn’t Sasha’s preferred events, she still participates and puts in a great effort for the team in every cross country race.
A big well done to the youngsters of HPAC who once again showed great effort and team spirit. The final race in the North Midlands Cross Country series is at Wollaton Park in Nottingham on 14th January, 2017, a week after the Derby Championships at the same venue.
On Sunday 27th Nov, Elliott Archibald and Megan Harris-Wood travelled to Manchester Regional Arena (Sportcity) to compete in the first of Sale Harriers Winter Indoor Series, Elliott, in his first ever indoor competition put on a very impressive display of his talent, in the 60m sprint he won his heat, which meant he would race again in the final, to be held at the end of the day, in which he came 1st in a highly competitive field of athletes. Between these 2 races he also ran in the 300m, which he came 2nd in his heat. Well done Elliott !!
Megan, who has just moved up an age category to U15 started her day in the long jump competition against some clearly experienced jumpers, she put in a strong performance coming 6th with a great jump of 4.49m and we know that with the continued effort she puts in these results will only grow as she does too! She then went on to come 5th in her 60m race and 3rd in her 300m heat.
These were great performance from both athletes who are new to the indoor competitions and hopefully at the next meeting of Sale Harriers Winter Series there will be more of the High Peak AC striking red vest on display, as even more of the clubs athletes go along to show their athletic talents.
A strong High Peak AC team competed in the 2nd Derby mini-league cross country meeting at Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston at the weekend (Sat 26th Nov), hosted by Amber Valley AC. The weather conditions were good (bright, cool, no rain), the course looked in good condition and we were ready to go!
First up were the under 11 girls in the 1km race. In this we had Freya Hatcher, Matilda Anderson and Alice Tolley. A very competitive race saw Alice Tolley and Matilda Anderson engaging in a very exciting finish, with Alice sprinting the last 75metres in an effort to catch up and narrowly coming 2nd and Matilda 3rd, not far behind the winning girl Olivia Allen from Matlock AC. It was good to see Matilda back in x country action after a brief time out. Freya was our third HPAC athlete in this event putting in a very solid performance coming in 23rd.
The under 11 boys race over 1.5km saw Samuel McGill taking an early lead in this race. He couldn’t quite keep that pace up, and soon was head to head with his team mate Xavier Morgan. Eventually the long stride of Xavier took him through to 14th position with Samuel coming in 15th. Great run from both boys.
The under 13 girls was run over 2km, and as expected a solid performance from the very versatile Megan Harris Wood of HPAC, coming in 2nd to Derby AC’s Valentino Costa. Jamie lee Taylor once again ran exceedingly well to come 11th, and Nell Tolley, although not a natural distance runner, put in a tremendous effort for the team coming in 21st.
In the under 15 girls race, Sosseh Badjie of HPAC ran strongly to get a very credible 2nd position, with Sasha Scragg of HPAC coming in 10th. Sasha is more noted for her short distance running but always puts in a good performance for the X country team. Charlotte Sweetmore had an incredible start to the race, leading in the opening stages and was still in a very good position when unfortunately she had to retire with a knee injury. Better luck next time Charlotte.
The team spirit, enthusiasm and effort of the HPAC kids was once again so evident in this mini league event. They are a credit to Buxton and surrounding High Peak area.
Next Saturday (3rd December) the x country team will be back in action in the 3rd North Midlands X country league event at Shipley Park with the next Derbyshire mini-league event coming up on 17th December at Tupton School, Chesterfield.
A first season for HPAC in the North Midlands Cross Country League has seen some very good performances in the first two fixtures. The first meeting was at Markeaton Park in Derby on Saturday 10th October. Good conditions and first up were our under 11 girls, in a 1.5km race with good performances from Matlida Anderson, Alice Tolley, Freya Hatcher and Annie Townsend. Matilda led for much of the race, and ended up in 3rd place, with Alice in 6th, Freya in 36th and Annie in 39th. In the girls under 13 race over 3km Megan Harris-Wood and Bella Anderson were flying the HPAC flag, with Megan coming in 5th and Bella 43rd. In the under 15 girls race over 3km Sosseh Badjie showing her usual consistency coming in 9th, with Charlotte Sweetmore and Sasha Scragg doing very well in 33rd, and 39th respectively. For the boys, HPAC had a good showing in the under 11 boys race, with Xavier Morgan and Samuel McGill coming in in 27th and 29th place respectively. Gregor McGill was the only other boy running today, coming in 43rd in the boys under 13 race over 3km.
The second meeting was a long distant for us to travel, at Wicksteed Park, Kettering. The drive there was over 2 hours with constant rain all the way. It looked like it was going to be a very wet conditions on the courses, but at least the rain relented when we got there, which made it a bit more pleasant for our athletes. The courses were undulating and challenging so a good test for our kids, but they all rose to the challenge and did exceedingly well. Alice Tolley was 4th in the under 11 girls race over 2km . Freya Hatcher ran a fine race coming in 32nd. Under 13 girls just had Jamie Lee Taylor for HPAC running who had to wait almost 3 hours to run on a churned up course, but came in a very good 13th over the 3km distance. In the Under 15 girls over 3km, our three girls, Sosseh Badjie, Charlotte Sweetmore and Sasha Scragg ran together again showing further consistency to come in 11th, 26th and 28th respectively. Finally, the boys team did us proud with Xavier Morgan and Samuel McGill once again the HPAC under 11 boys representatives, finishing 33rd and 43rd respectively over 2km. Samuel managed a remarkable downhill sprint in the final section of the race. In the 3km under 13 boys race Samuels brother Gregor offered no such similar sprint, but finished 25th, a credible performance.
Overall, both our girls and boys put in some really good performances in their first two North Midlands events. Twelve clubs were represented over the two meetings, and the quality of competition was high – so a step up for our young athletes! Well done to all who competed.
There are two more North Midlands meetings to come on the 3rd Dec (Heaner) and 14th Jan (Nottingham), so hope to see some more HPAC runners at these.
High Peak get off to a flying start…
At the first of the sports hall meetings for the 2016-17 season HPAC delivered a fine performance and claim a well deserved second place overall in the competition. We had a great turn out of athletes who were all keen to try their hardest and show their athletic skills, 3 of our athletes even managed to set new records in the all new sports hall facilities in Chesterfield; Elliott Archibald in the 2 lap race, Eddie Fenton & Megan Harris-Wood in their 6 lap races and the U13 boys team set a new 4×2 relay record !
First shout out has to go to the U13 boys who took a strong first place in their age group with some very impressive performances. The rest of the U13 boys team all helped to contribute to the points, Gregor McGill in 6 lap, Joey Hollamby in VHJ, David Laver put in an excellent performance in the 2 lap coming 7th. The team then went on win the relay with an emphatic performance.
The U15 boys also produced some excellent results winning 2nd place overall in their age group and considering we only had 2 boys competing on the day this shows just how impressive they were. Elliott Archibald dominated his field with two 1st places in 2 lap & 4 lap, he then competed strongly in STJ taking 3rd. Fraser Masterson performed excellently in his events with two 3rd places in 2 lap & shot, 4th in STJ.
Not to be left behind the U11 boys also took 2nd place overall in their age group. with all 4 boys: Sam McGill, Boris Holiday,Thomas Johnson and Morgan Baker all contributing points for their team. They too finished an impressive 2nd place in the relay.
The girls were to show the boys that they too could deliver some very strong performances.
In the U11 girls age group we had a very impressive 7 competitors, our strongest turn out and considering it was the first time for some of them competing, they all did extremely well, they too took 2nd place overall in their age group. Freyer Hatcher had an excellent day, 1st in chest pass, 2nd in STJ & 3rd in the 1 lap race. Marrissa Jackson took 2nd in chest push,(along side Freyers 1st) & 6th in VHJ. Eva-Jane Berry also contributed to the team points, coming 5th in STJ.
U13 girls took 3rd overall, again we only had 4 girls competing on the day but they all pushed themselves to get some truely excellent results. Megan Harris-Wood had two very close finishes in her 2 lap & 6 lap races, she took 1st in the 6 lap, but narrowly missed out for 2nd in the 2 lap! she also got 2nd place in the STJ. Katie Taylor perform strongly on the day, winning points for the team in all 3 events, she took 2nd in shot, 7th in 2 lap & 9th in VHJ. Nell Tolley pushed herself hard in the 6 lap and got herself a very impressive 3rd place, she came 9th in STJ. Bella Anderson worked hard for her team claiming points in shot & VHJ, finishing 8th & 11th.
Finally the U15 girls. who finished 3rd overall. We had a team of 5 girls, 3 of which are fairly new to athletics and have never competed in a sports hall competition before! so the results they got are really very impressive. Sosseh Badjie ran an excellent race to come joint 2nd in the 2 lap, she looked very impressive in the 4 lap and finished 3rd, she was 10th in VHJ. all the other girls worked really hard to gain points for the team, Shannon Arden in VHJ & shot, Charlotte Sweetmore in the 2 lap, Amiee Sweetmore in Shot and Sasha Scragg in 4 lap.
The whole team displayed an excellent attitude on the day not only by getting such amazing results but also by showing great team spirit, encouraging and supporting each other.
