High Peak’s young athletes put in star performances at North Midlands Cross country league season opener
High Peak Athletics Club took a team to Markeaton Park, Derby on Saturday 14th October for the first North Midlands Cross Country league race of the 2017-18 season. On a warm Autumn’s day that had the ladybirds out, there was a fantastic team spirit as always and some very hot performances
First up was the girls under 11 race run over a distance of 1.5km. On a flat fast course Alice Tolley of High Peak AC came 1st in a close race with Iris Clarke of Sutton Harriers. In the same race there were debuts for HPAC athletes Hannah Dunkin (20th) and Imogen Wilson (34th), who competed really well and showed much promise for the future. In the boys under 11 race (also over 1.5km) George Tweedie was the first boy in for High Peak in 13th, followed by Xavier Morgan in 16th, Josh Edlin 22nd, Samuel McGill 26th, with debut boy Hamish Tweedie coming 28th. All these boys ran really well in a fast race with very little distance between the first and last runner. The final race involving High Peak athletes was the combined boys under 13 and girls under 15 race run over 3.5km. The race was also run at a high pace throughout – in the boys race for High Peak William Stanway (also making his league cross country debut) came in 19th, with Gregor McGill 35th, and in the girls race, Sosseh Badjie performed very well to come in 3rd girl, with Elspeth Morgan showing great determination to come in 40th.
This is a very competitive league with kids competing from clubs from Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Notts, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire – so a very well done to all High Peaks youngsters!
