High Peak athletes marvellous medal haul at Championships.

The Derbyshire Athletics Championships were held over the weekend of 13th & 14th May, at Moorways Stadium, Derby.

Frankie & Eddie with their medals from 200m
High Peak AC was not only well represented across both track and field events, with many PB’s gained by the talented young athletes, but HPAC also came away with a total of nine individual medals.
The speedy boys brought home five of the medals.  U15 boys Eddie Fenton and Frankie Heathcote dominated in the sprint races with them winning both gold (Eddie) and silver (Frankie) in the 200m, Eddie also took silver in a closely fought 100m race while Frankie ran an amazing 300m race to win the gold medal.  Fraser Masterson U17 won a silver medal in shot with a PB throw of 8.09m, he also competed strongly in the 100m gaining yet another PB time.

U15 girls, always a well represented age category, saw Katie Taylor, Megan Harris-Wood, Nell Tolley and Sosseh Badjie run a super 4×100 relay race to win the bronze medal.

Sosseh Badjie

The very talented Sosseh also won a further two medals, she fought hard in the 1500m to take silver, then in the 800m race she gained a bronze medal.  Megan had a busy weekend competing in the 100m & 200m races where she gained PB’s in both, making it into the final of the 200m. Finally she displayed her talent and athleticism by winning a bronze medal in Long Jump with a new PB jump of 4.63m.

Megan Harris-Wood

Nell showed how she’s improving every time she competes with two new PB’s in 100m & 200m.  Katie displayed her amazing variety of athletic talents by throwing a new PB of 7.39m in the shot, she went on to run a new PB time in 100m.   Also competing for the U15 girls were Sasha Scragg and Aimee Sweetmore, both girls showed tremendous effort and determination in their events.  Sasha ran the 100m & 200m races, gaining a PB in 200m, she also bravely competed in 75m hurdles.  Whilst Aimee competed in 100m & shot taking a PB in both.

Charlotte Sweetmore U17 who is fairly new to athletics showed a strong display of her talents in the 1500m, this being only the second time she has competed at this distance and giving her a new PB.
Also held during the Derbyshire Championships weekend was the U11’s QUADKIDS ChampionshipQUADKIDS consists of athletes scoring points across 4 athletic events: 75m, howler javelin, long jump and 600m.
In an exciting boys competition, Xavier Morgan carried the flag for HPAC coming a credible 6th out of 10 athletes, with his star performance being a 1st place in the 600m race where he showed great pace and speed to lead from the start and win with a PB of 2.05m.
Alice Tolley

There was high drama in the girls competition as Alice Tolley was lying in 5th place after 3 events. Needing a clear win in the final 600m race she achieved this with a time of 1.55m, which was just enough to capture a share of overall gold in a three way tie for first place with two other girls from Amber Valley and Erewash AC. Plum Kidd and Thalia Parker-Heath were competing in their first QUADKIDS competition, and came 13th and 14th respectively. The girls showed great potential with Thalia throwing an impressive 15.4m in the howler javelin, and Plum showing fast legs in the 75m, with a time of 13 seconds.
